  4.     The woman was just completing a heroin sale in Seattle when
  5. from around the corner whooshed a couple of cops mounted on
  6. bicycles. They quickly arrested the suspected drug dealer,
  7. called for a patrol car and had her hauled off to jail. In the
  8. woman's purse was a letter from a friend warning her to keep an
  9. eye peeled for cops on bikes.

  11.     Like scores of other cities, Seattle (which came up with
  12. the idea first) has found that its pedal-pushing patrol has
  13. become, in the words of Officer Paul Grady, "quite the urban
  14. crime fighter." Wheeling rugged 18-speed mountain bikes into
  15. parks, doorways, narrow alleys and even under viaducts,
  16. Seattle's squad of 20 bike officers has averaged five times the
  17. number of arrests made by downtown foot patrols over the past
  18. two years.

  20.     "The element of surprise is incredible," says Grady.
  21. "Criminals still aren't used to us whipping around the corner
  22. and taking drugs right out of their hands. They look around,
  23. don't see a patrolman, car or horse, and make the deal. We whip
  24. around and catch them."
